Water Quality Unit

New    Fact Sheet

The Water Quality Unit provides hydrologic support to ADWR activities that pertain to water quality and is the primary liaison to the Department of Environmental Quality Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) Program.

The principal functions of the Unit are to:

                        Review Notices of Intent and Well Permits                                                                                                                         

The Water Quality Unit reviews Notices of Intent (NOI) to drill, modify, or abandon wells within or near remedial action sites in Arizona and well permit applications to drill non-exempt wells within active management areas (AMAs) are reviewed for compliance with Arizona minimum and special well construction requirements.

                        Develop and Implement Special Well Construction and Abandonment Requirements                                         

Special well construction and abandonment requirements at remedial action sites, as referred to in the previous bullet, are developed and implemented by the Water Quality Unit. In all circumstances, well construction and abandonment must prevent vertical cross-contamination within an aquifer or between aquifers.

                        Conduct Comprehensive Well Inventories                                                                                                                         

Comprehensive well inventories are conducted within and near WQARF sites by the Water Quality Unit.  These well inventories are an important component of the well verification and database improvement program and the WQARF Remedial Investigation (RI) process.  Well records from various well databases are reconciled and field-verified.

                        Provide hydrologic support to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality                                                 

The Water Quality Unit provides hydrologic support to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) Program (This link is to an external site.  Use your browser back button to return to the Water Quality Unit).   These various activities are specified in an Inter-agency Service Agreement negotiated each fiscal year by ADWR and ADEQ.  For a brief background of WQARF and the responsibilities of the Water Quality Unit, click here.

                        Represent ADWR on the WQARF Advisory Board                                                                                                           

The Water Quality Unit supervisor represents ADWR on the WQARF Advisory Board, reporting all WQARF activities and expenditures to the Board, the legislature, and the Governor.
